Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial plant that belongs to the ginger family. The dried and ground rootstock (rhizome) of this plant is the source of the orange-yellow turmeric spice commonly found in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, most notably curry. In both spice and dietary supplements, the primary active component of turmeric responsible for its health benefits is curcumin. Curcumin is the dominant one of three active curcuminoids found in turmeric. The other two curcuminoids are demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.
